Morning Routine for 8am Class

Thursday, April 05, 2018

Waking up early has never been my forté, given the chance I could sleep in a lot longer than I'm willing to admit... However this semester I have classes at 8am everyday, so that had to change! Long story short, I've been forced to become a morning person and I actually love it. Your morning sets the tone for the rest of the day which is why developing an effective routine is essential.

How to wake up at 6am

Arguably the hardest part of the morning is actually forcing yourself out of your bed. So I'm going to share a few things I've learned that make it completely doable! Watching the gorgeous sunrise from my room definitely helps!

Get clear on the reason you're trying to wake up earlier. Once you have a tangible motivating factor (such as having time in the morning to exercise, etc) you're so much more likely to commit to waking up earlier. Don't hit snooze! You're just tricking your brain into thinking you're going back to sleep, which restarts your sleep cycle and ends up making it 10000 times more difficult to wake up 10 minutes later. Change your alarm regularly. Lastly, I've been using Mel Robbin's five second rule which has been such a game changer!

My Morning Routine

*Disclaimer, this is my ideal morning, it doesn't always get executed perfectly*

6:05 - Wake up
My alarm goes off and the first thing I do when I get up is make my bed. This makes it so much easier not to get back in and fall asleep!

6:15 - Tea & meditate
I'll put on my kettle and while the water's boiling I usually try and meditate. If you've never meditated before I highly recommend the app Headspace! I also like using essential oils when I'm waking up and going to bed.

6:30 - Plan the day
While I'm drinking tea I'll normally look at my google calendar and plan out what I need to get done that day. I'll also have uplifting music playing in the background so I don't fall asleep. If I had time the night before I'll have overnight oats for breakfast, if not I would just get something on my way to class.

6:45 - Getting ready
After this I'll start getting ready, I normally plan my outfit the night before which cuts down SO MUCH time in the morning!

7:15 - Leave for class
At this point I'll get my bag and either walk to class if the weather's nice, or take the school shuttle (or Uber because I'm running late).
